Quarter by Quarter Breakdown
I have worked to support the endeavors of those behind the implementation of an ASL program here at the University of Washington. I finished work with the Colleges and Schools Organizational Committee--the finished report is available online. I worked extensively on the issues surrounding the Student Conduct Code, as a member on the Conduct Code Workgroup. We, the ASUW, started two taskforces which I am taking an active role in: Off-Campus Affairs Reform Taskforce, and the Medal of Honor Recipient Memorial. I took an active role in the development of Homecoming, ensuring co-sponsorship with Tyler Dockins, the Director of Programming. Aside from that, I have sat on numerous University Committees and helped each of the Board of Directors members with their respective projects wherever I have been able to.
During winter quarter I was a part of multiple University Committees. At the beginning of the quarter, I finished up work as a part of the Conduct Code Workgroup, which worked with employees, students, faculty, and the state of Washington to come to a resolution on the issues surrounding the area N of 45th and student conduct. We were able to view and pass legislation at Student Senate which provided standing student opinion on the conduct code, ultimately agreeing to a limited expansion.
A great deal of work was done last quarter on the Medal of Honor Recipient Memorial Taskforce. We developed a lot of the relationships necessary for fundraising, and were able to cap off our $100,000 goal at the beginning of spring quarter.
Midway through the quarter I joined the Student Services and Resources Committee, which was charged with the task of offering guidance in how to make Student Services and Resources more accessible. I played a significant role on the Virtual Resource Center subcommittee, which evaluated the feasibility of a virtual center, and developed a model for such.
Sam Al-Khoury and I began the undertaking of beginning two fundraising initiatives--The Husky Tee and Change. Both ideas developed from our passion to eliminate the barriers to access for students. To this end, we created the Husky Pride Fund, which will help us to accomplish those goals. The project that I have focused on, The Husky Tee, has required me to build a vast network throughout the campus community amongst retailers, administrative offices, faculty, and most importantly students. We organized a competition for the design, and obtained 2,300 dollars in funding from OVPSL, OVPUAA, OVPOMA/D.
I also served as a member of the UW Tower Planning Advisory Committee, Off-Campus Housing Affairs Taskforce, the Faculty Senate Executive Committee, the Senate Committee on Planning and Budgeting, the University Budget Committee, and multiple other University Committees.
During the quarter I was able to firmly establish all of the relationships we developed through working on the Husky Tee, Change, and the Husky Pride Fund. We received over 250 unique entries for the Husky Tee Design Competition from students. In order to select the design, we formed a panel comprised of representatives from every major living and affinity group on campus. After multiple hours of debate and deliberations, we selected the winning design--"The Pride of Washington." We were able to work with Kotis Design to print the shirts and get them ready in time for the UW Alumni Association's Washington Weekend. At first, Husky Tees were selling like hot cakes, but soon thereafter sales slowed down as a result of running out of smaller sizes and selling out of women's shirts. It was not a bad problem to have, but the demand was slightly underestimated, and we had to arrange a formal agreement before we printed another batch. I anticipate that those shirts will be printed and available before commencement.
Work on the UW Tower Planning Advisory Committee continued, as plans changed once our financial restrictions were known and we obtained a budget allocation from the state legislature. The new, and almost final, plans free up a great amount of space on campus, which will hopefully work to serve students the most effectively. An important development of note is the allocation of space in the S Building of the UW Tower that will house Development and Alumni Relations (also known as UW Advancement). I anticipate that the committee will reform in the fall in order to evaluate space allocation on campus.
The Biennial Budget came back from Olympia and the University acquired a much higher allocation than has been the case in the last 20 years. It will provide funding for multiple areas of note, including Faculty Salaries, the Undergraduate Experience, Campus Safety, and Global Learning Opportunities. Despite the increase in state funding, resident undergraduates will be seeing a 7% increase in tuition this year, while out of state undergraduates will be receiving a 4% increase in tuition. I expect to see two things: 1. The state will struggle with the budget in the supplemental year--expect to see attempts to cut the budget, and 2. A 7% increase will most likely be on the table for next year--don't resign yourself to thinking that 7% is inevitable.
Once Spring Quarter came, discussions surrounding the Biennial Budget intensified, particularly in the University Budget Committee and the Senate Committee on Planning and Budgeting meetings. Most of the debate surrounded Faculty Salaries. It was important to maintain a strong presence during those meetings, as the focus typically shifted off of students as a result of the predominant majority of faculty members in attendance. These meetings began to occur on a weekly basis, as opposed to the once every two weeks that occurred in the Fall and Winter. You will catch yourself thinking that Senate Committee on Planning and Budgeting meetings are boring, but things definitely heat up once the budget comes down the turn pike. Pike? Have you heard of the 'decade of dominance?'
I also sat on the Global Citizenship Taskforce. The TF was commissioned to look at how we can make sure that all undergraduates at the University of Washington obtain a higher understanding of their local and global communities. In other words, how can we make our students more worldly? The GCTF was immensely fun, and contained a lot of debate, particularly around maintaining a focus on ensuring that students from lower economic backgrounds are able to obtain the 'same' experiences as more wealthy students have. I anticipate that the recommendations of this TF will come out within the next two weeks.
One piece of advise... Make sure that all of these reports that are developed are taken into account when you're sitting on TFs. I think that the biggest mistake made by all chairs of TFs that I've sat on is that they start with a blank slate when much of the world has already been done. You will find this to be the case in almost all areas--people love to reinvent the wheel so that they can take credit for it. Sometimes its not even done on purpose, but its still done.
Spring Quarter will eat you alive, but damn it is so much fun.
