The OGR Research Assistant position was eliminated by recommendation of the ASUW Personnel Committee in Spring 2007, and defunded by the ASUW Board of Directors shortly thereafter. The position had been recommended for full, year-round funding to research legislation related to higher education. The OGR reform task force recommended that the position be funded as part of a "Student Policy Group" that was ultimately not created. The OGR Assistant Director is now responsible for many of the Research Assistant's duties, including research of policy, management of records, and updating the website.
During the 108th Session the Board of Directors reinstated the position of Research Assistant at the request of the Office of Government Relations. The 2009 Washington State budget crisis mandated an increased amount of work from the OGR and thus they requested the hire of the additional Research Assistant which still existed in the ASUW Bylaws.
